Somatics + Dance Practice

Rooted in principles from somatics, contemporary dance and hatha yoga, class engages with gentle, mindful movement that increases movement capacity, attends to the body’s wisdom and encourages joy and creativitiy.

The goal is to develop your relationship with your subtle and dynamic body to support a life of connection and aliveness.

Class draws from the wisdom of various practices including Hatha Yoga, Barteneiff Fundamental Movement Patterns, Contact Improvisation, Transformative Touch Somatic Therapy, Feldenkrais Method, Klein Technique and Body-Mind Centering, Contemporary Dance and Creative Movement. Class is gentle, inquisitive, constructive and fun! It is intended for mature bodies and/or bodies desiring a slower and gentler movement practice.

Class begins with quiet centering and proceeds into center and across the floor exercises from yoga, somatics and dance. Class culminates with a short dance/movement phrase or movement improvisation. Music will be used and not used, depending on the needs of the day.

“During somatic awareness, one’s physical sensations may be accompanied by thoughts and emotions, hence, somatic awareness is a psychophysical experience. Somatic movement experiences explicitly teach knowing how to perceive the body, how to stay aware during daily activities and how to make connections to derive meaning and purpose from these sensations.”
